Our Master Capt. Neeraj Tripathi sailing on one of our managed Tanker M.V. Maersk Privilege was awarded the “ICG SAR Award for Merchant vessel” on 17th July at Gandhinagar, Gujarat , during the National Maritime Search and Rescue (NMSAR) .
This award was for the assistance provided in rescue operation of fishermen at sea near Lakshadweep.
On the night of 09th May’15, while the vessel en route from Singapore to Fujairah, passing through HRA in Arabian Sea, in the vicinity of Lakshadweep Islands, some 300 nautical miles away from the Indian Coast, The Master received a call from Third Officer informing about a fishing boat in distress, calling continuously on VHF.
The vessel immediately , contacted the fishing boat and were informed that their boat “Arputha Matha”
had developed a hole and was flooding which they are unable to control. In fact the boat had grounded over a charted reef. MRCC Mumbai were informed about the distress situation . MRCC was requested
to mobilize their assets best way for the situation as the vessel being a large tanker in loaded condition and restricted in her ability to reach safely close to the fishing boat beyond the safe limit of 3-4 nautical miles.
The Ship then proceeded for the rescue and maintained continuous communication with Arputha Matha, the boat Owner and MRCC for frequent updates while reassuring that coastguard vessels had been
dispatched and was on the way for rescue.
All the ten fishermen from Arputha Matha were later transferred safely to another boat “Auster” which responded to the call and arrived on scene . After the rescue operation was completed, the skipper of Auster advised about the safe condition of all the rescued fishermen and confirmed that no further assistance was required and they were proceeding to their village in Kanyakumari.
After being released from the rescue mission by MRCC, vessel resumed her passage to Fujairah. It was a well coordinated team effort, in which entire crew of Maersk Privilege had participated in preparing the vessel, to deal with any kind of eventuality could be expected under the circumstances.
We thank all the crew members of Maersk Privilege and Fishing vessel Auster and MRCC Mumbai, in making this rescue operation successful and saving lives of 10 fishermen.
